The most effective and popular caddis pupa imitation in the west.
Our regional streams are loaded with caddis, especially the Sacramento, and the Fox Caddis Poopahs are the first choice for most guides and expert anglers. Each of these models is tied to Tim Fox's (Retail Manager here at The Fly Shop®) exacting standards, using nothing but top quality materials and tying methods that insure durability.

Tying Instructions:
Always burn the vernille first, if you don't, it will look unfinished. Set your pile of little burnt bodies aside. Slide bead on first. Tie in the wire at the back and then the tinsel (usually the point on the shank that is even with the barb). Move thread up behind the bead. Wrap the tinsel forward covering the underbody completely up to and behind the bead, tie off. Tie in the unburnt end of the vernille behind the bead and lay it back over the body so that the burnt end lays just past the very end of the hook. Use the wire to rib the body and at the same time secure the vernille on the top of the hook. Tie in the henback for legs underneath, the fibers should at least be half the length of the body if not more. Tie in two strands of wood duck over the back about the same length as the body but it's ok if the antennae are a lot longer than the body. Tie in two ostrich herls, twist them together and wrap a few times for your collar. Tie off and whip finish several times behind bead for good measure. |
